Approval:
Approval means an approval of the physician by the CPSA to perform a particular procedure or use a particular technology in a medical office setting. Only a small number of office-based procedures and technologies require specific approval from the CPSA. Approval is based on the training and experience of the physician. These approvals do not necessarily apply to the hospital setting, which is the responsibility of Alberta Health Services.
Special Interest:
Special Interest is an area of practice for which the physician has requested and been granted approval from the CPSA based on specific training beyond a typical residency training program. Physicians so approved may advertise a “special interest” in that area of practice. Approval to advertise a “special interest” requires less training than is required to be recognized as a “Specialist”.
Practice Interests:
Practice Interests are identified by the physician but do not reflect any approval process and may or may not indicate specific additional training. A patient who wants to know about the training and experience of his or her physician should ask the physician for details.
