Information for Applicants
Applicant Requirements
For Practice Readiness Assessments
- To qualify for an assessment, an applicant must first apply through Registration for a practice permit.
- An applicant for the Provisional Register Conditional Practice is required to undergo and successfully pass an approved practice readiness assessment before the College will grant a practice permit to practise medicine.
- The applicant must have a sponsor before an assessment will take place.
- The applicant is responsible for obtaining a sponsor.
- Before seeking a sponsor, the applicant must have a letter from the College confirming eligibility to apply for a practice permit.
- The applicant may not arrange and/or pay for his or her own assessment.
- The applicant must inform the College in writing of the name and full contact information of the sponsor.
- The sponsor must be acceptable to the College.
- The sponsor must be recruiting the applicant to a defined practice position.
- The sponsor must agree to pay all costs related to the assessment.
- The College does not maintain a list of sponsors or physician vacancies.
- The Provincial Physician Assessment Program (PPAP) of the College will notify the applicant of next steps, which includes signing a letter of understanding with the College to indicate he or she agrees with the terms of participation in PPAP.
- Once the applicant signs the letter of understanding, the College will make related arrangements with an assessor(s) for the assessment.
- If the applicant is not successful on the assessment, neither the College, the sponsor nor AHS is responsible for providing the applicant with training.
- If the applicant is not successful on the assessment, the College will not grant him or her a practice permit without further application.
Information from the Provincial Physician Assessment Program (PPAP)
- The Registration department will notify PPAP of the applicant’s need for a practice readiness assessment.
- Neither the applicant nor the sponsor should contact PPAP to request details of the assessment until PPAP formally notifies him or her that an assessment file exists.
- An assessment file will be opened within 10 business days. PPAP will then contact the applicant and sponsor to outline the next steps.
