Triplicate Prescription Program (TPP)

Background information

  • Introduced in 1986
  • Program participants: Alberta College of Pharmacists (ACP), Alberta Dental Association & College (ADA&C), College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) and Yukon Medical Council (YMC)
  • Funded exclusively by prescribers and pharmacy fees until 1998, when Alberta Health & Wellness began providing primary financial support.

Program Mandate

  • To collect and collate data, including information concerning the use of TPP drugs for any patient (or patients), in a prescription database.
  • To provide relevant information to registered practitioners on the prescribing of TPP drugs
  • To liaise with other health and professional organizations involved in, or responsible for, the operation of the Triplicate Prescription Program

Program Accomplishments

  • Providing information regarding TPP drug use to:
    • prescribers to support patient care 
    • health regulatory agencies e.g. ADA&C, and YMC.
