Independent Practice, including locums

Applying for a practice permit under the Health Professions Act (HPA)

Family physicians and specialists who want to practise independently in Alberta must obtain an Alberta medical practice permit in order to:

  • Diagnose and treat patients
  • Order investigations
  • Write prescriptions


NOTE:
Physicians who have been out of independent practice or formal postgraduate training for three or more years may not be eligible for a practice permit.

Requirements

Family Medicine or General Practice

 An acceptable medical degree (primary medical qualification) is one issued by:
  • A Canadian medical school accredited by the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC),
  • A medical school in the United States of America accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME),
  • An osteopathic school accredited by the American Osteopathic Association Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation, or
  • A school of medicine or osteopathy listed in the International Medical Education Directory (IMED).
