Alberta Medical Practice Permit

Telemedicine or Teleradiology

Telemedicine is the provision of medical diagnosis and patient care by means of electronic communication where the patient and the provider are separated by distance. Telemedicine may include, but is not limited to, the provision of pathology, medical imaging, and patient consultative services.

A physician must not practise telemedicine in Alberta from a location outside of Alberta unless he or she is currently registered with the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta. However, a physician is not required to register with the College if the consultation is for emergency assessment or treatment of a patient, or the physician provides telemedicine consultations in Alberta less than six (6) times per year.

For further information on Telemedicine in Alberta, see section 22 of the Standards of Practice.
