Physician Extender

Physician Extenders are physicians or osteopaths who are enrolled in an Alberta accredited postgraduate training program as a resident or fellow who have met the criteria for Physician Extenders.

Physician Extenders are not the most responsible physician in the care of patients and their practice of medicine is subject to the supervision of the Clinical Department Head or designate.

Criteria for Physician Extenders

  • Be on the Provisional Register, Postgraduate Training of the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta.
  • Have successfully completed a minimum of 18 months postgraduate training.
  • Have a letter of support from the Program Director indicating the candidate’s satisfactory performance and good standing in their residency training program.
  • Have obtained the Licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada (LMCC).
  • Work under supervision at all times.
  • The after hours coverage as part of the educational experience, taken together with shifts as an Extender, must not breach the PARA agreement.  

How to Apply (Physician Extender)

 

Criteria for Physician Extenders -- Surgical Assistant Only

  • Be on the Provisional Register, Postgraduate Training of the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta in a non-Ministry funded programme.
  • Have a letter of support from the Program Director or Department Chair confirming the candidate is in a non-Ministry funded fellowship training position and the candidate will be providing surgical assistance on a fee for service basis.
  • Work under supervision at all times.
