Physician Approvals

Physicians must be registered with the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta to practise medicine in Alberta. Physicians also require additional approval to provide certain services in accredited facilities. Applications are approved by committee or by the Registrar of the College, and are processed through the College's Quality of Care department.

Services Requiring Committee Approval

Cardiac Exercise Stress Testing (in private facilities)
Diagnostic Imaging (in private & public facilities)
Neurophysiology Testing (in private & public facilities)
- Sleep Medicine (in private facilities)
- Vestibular Testing (in private facilities)
Non-Hospital Surgical Procedures (in private facilities)
Pulmonary Function Testing (in private & public facilities)
Performing Medical Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (in private & public facilities)

Services Requiring Registrar Approval

Performing or supervising a diagnostic or treatment procedure that is restricted to facilities accredited by the College (Reference: Approved Procedures for Non-Hospital Surgical Facilities)
Performing Acupuncture (Reference: Standards of Practice (Section 12))
Performing Hair Transplantation (Reference: Standards of Practice (Section 12))
Performing Complementary and Alternative Medicine
Advertising a Special Interest
Performing as an Injury Management Consultant or Certified Examiner under Alberta's Minor Injury Regulations

Services Not Requiring Approval

Other procedures like the use of lasers* and Botox® are not restricted to accredited facilities and do not require specific approval from the CPSA. However, physicians are expected to use their best judgment in limiting their services to those for which their training meets or exceeds the commonly accepted standard of practice in the medical community. *Note – Lasers must be registered as they are a designated Radiation Emitting Device under Alberta’s Radiation Protection Act. The CPSA is the administrative organization with responsibility for registering lasers for medical use in Alberta. That process requires a safety review by an Accredited Radiation Protection Agency and submission of a compliance report to the College before a registration certificate is issued.
